Home Insights The Launch of AƒeTech – Tech at Home in Salo, Ghana

On 14th July 2024, the NewRedo team had the privilege of travelling to Salo-Sokutsime in Ghana’s Volta Region to officially launch our new Social Value initiative: AƒeTech. “Aƒe” means Home in Ewe, and at its heart, AƒeTech is about making technology feel at home in the community. It’s about bringing the digital world into local environments to inspire, educate, and transform lives.

Why Ghana, Why Us?

Ghana holds a special place in our hearts at NewRedo. We already have a software development team based in Ghana, and many of our staff are Ghanaian or African by heritage. For us, this is not just about giving back; it’s about investing in a community that is part of who we are. Ghana itself is a remarkable country. Nestled on the west coast of Africa, bordered by Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and Burkina Faso, it is home to over 34 million people. It is a nation of vibrant culture, political stability, and rapid growth. While traditionally known for gold, cocoa, and natural resources, Ghana is increasingly becoming a hub for technology and digital innovation. With more than half of its population under the age of 25, the future is bright,; but access to digital tools and training is uneven, especially in rural areas like Salo. That’s why AƒeTech matters. It is about creating opportunities where they are needed most, bridging the digital divide, and equipping young people with skills for the modern world.

A Warm Welcome

When we arrived at Salo D/A Basic School, where more than 200 pupils aged 4–20 study, we were greeted in the most heart-warming way. The whole school and wider community had gathered for a special assembly. We arrived to singing, drumming and dancing. The school's new brass band - whose instruments were a gift from the Ghanaian King - played with gusto and pride. It made me smile! We were honoured by the presence of His Royal Highness Torgbi Agbelorm Agbotokor II, Queen Mother Mama Amedzor II, and their elders. They spoke of commitment to education and to ensuring that every child in Salo has a chance to succeed.

Gifts of Knowledge

On behalf of NewRedo, we brought with us some laptops and a projector, along with classroom essentials like pens and exercise books. Many of the children had never touched a computer. I’ll never forget the look on their faces: a mix of curiosity, excitement, and possibility. These donations may seem a simple thing, but they represent a doorway to opportunity. With them, pupils can begin exploring digital literacy, coding, and ICT skills that will help shape their future.

The IT-Literate Queen and Her Vision for the Future

One of the most inspiring moments of the day came from Queen Mother Mama Amedzor II. As an IT-literate leader, she spoke passionately about her vision: to ensure that children in Salo are not left behind in the digital age. Her ambition is clear: to establish an ICT lab at the school, equip pupils with the skills demanded by the modern world, and break down the barriers that have kept rural communities from accessing digital opportunities. Her words reminded us that leadership comes in many forms. Here, in a village in Ghana’s Volta Region, a Queen Mother is championing coding, digital literacy, and the future of her children. It was a powerful reminder of why AƒeTech matters and why we must keep building.

Building Momentum

But this is just the beginning. Thanks to donations we’ve already received, the next cohort will soon be equipped. Still, there is much more to do. Our ambition is to support the school in establishing an ICT lab aligned with the Ghanaian ICT curriculum and to launch a Code Club that will spark creativity and nurture problem-solving skills. AƒeTech is about building something lasting: local technology that belongs to children in their homes, schools, and communities. How You Can Help We can’t do this alone. We are calling on our friends, partners, and organisations to stand with us. If you have unused IT equipment – laptops, desktops, projectors, or peripherals or if you’d like to support us through funding or partnership, we would love to hear from you. Contact us at info@newredo.com to donate or explore collaboration opportunities.

Why Digital Inclusion Matters

Digital inclusion is no longer a luxury; it is essential for the future. The world our children are growing into will be shaped by technology at every level, from education and healthcare to jobs and everyday life. Without access to digital skills, pupils risk being left behind.

Through AƒeTech, we want to empower young people in Salo to take their equal place in the digital world. By learning how to use technology, code, and think creatively with digital tools, they will not only unlock opportunities but also contribute to their communities and to Ghana’s growing digital economy. This is about more than equipment; it’s about opening doors, raising confidence, and creating futures.
